NEW EPISODE: Becoming a Chocolate Expert

When we lived back in California, I worked for a while in the neuroscience department at UC San Diego studying the science of wisdom. One day the professor running the department asked me if I wanted to join him at the healthy aging event the team was putting on that night.

Man, if you want to study wisdom hanging out at events with a couple hundred seniors is your jam, so I was all in. The topic that night was chocolate and its scientific link to laughter and happiness. Hummmm . . . I'm listening! The best part of the event was when the lead speaker, a psychologist specializing in laughter, and his son, who ran an artisan chocolate shop, made us taste test chocolate in an entirely different way.

That young man was Ryan Berk, own of Parliament Chocolate. The stories he told of trekking through the Honduran cacao plantains, meeting with the families who had specialized in chocolate for generations - as well as the delicious samples they were sharing with us - changed forever how I see, enjoy and appreciate the art and science behind one of all of our favourite indulgences.

In this week's episode of Your Wellness Journey, I got together with Ryan as he walked us through becoming a chocolate expert.

I hope you enjoy this delicious episode. The more that we can connect to our passions and understanding in a deeper way why we love what we love, the better we become at discovering more our our passions and unlocking layers of our creativity we didn't even know existed.

Sending you sweet chocolate wishes. - Marla

They said the snow would start at 7am today. First they said we'd receive 10 cm, then they changed it to 20cm. I made tea, raked up our last haul of leaves, and sat by the fireplace and watched the 40 foot birch in our front yard. Sometimes I feel like she and I have a lot in common. Although she has already released most of her leaves, prepping for her winter hibernation, she has this huge branch that is clinging to every last ochre leaf as if to say "I'm not quite ready yet". Goodness, I...
